Nine Persons Charged in Iceland Kaupþing Bank Case | Iceland Review

March 19, 2013 13:36 (Updated: January 30, 2014 20:24)
"Nine individuals, including former Kaupþing CEO Hreiðar Már Sigurðsson and chair Sigurður Einarsson, have been charged by the Office of the Special Prosecutor in Iceland for having been party to universal market abuse involving Kaupþing Bank buying shares in itself.

The charge was issued last week and presented to the accused yesterday. This is the most extensive case the Special Prosecutor has ever been involved in and the most extensive of its kind in the world, according to Fréttablaðið.

Former director of Kaupþing in Luxembourg Magnús Guðmundsson and former director of Kaupþing in Iceland Ingólfur Helgason are also facing charges. The other five persons are all former employees of Kaupþing.

The case concerns five matters of market abuse which have been under investigation for a long time and have now been combined in a single charge.

These include Kaupþing’s acquisition of 29 percent of all available shares in itself in 2005-2008. The Special Prosecutor has reasoned suspicion that the trade was carried out with the knowledge and intent of the bank’s key executives, in a systematic and organized manner to maintain the value of shares.

The shares were purchased, among other methods, through special customers who were granted loans from Kaupþing for the acquisition.

The day before Kaupþing collapsed in October 2008, 92 percent of the portfolio of assets of the bank’s proprietary trading was shares in the bank itself."

"Sigurður Einarsson, former chairman of Kaupþing Bank, has today been sentenced to one year in prison in the so-called 'big market manipulation case' at the Reykjavík district Court. Hreiðar Már Sigurðsson was also found guilty, but was not sentenced on top of the existing prison term he is already serving following the Al-Thani case.

According to RÚV, Sigurður’s sentence will be in addition to the four year sentence he is already serving following the Al-Thani case.

Ingólfur Helgason, former president of Kaupþing Iceland, was sentenced to four-and-a-half years’ prison time.

Magnús Guðmundsson, former manager of Kaupþing Luxembourg, was acquitted and two other charges against him were dropped.

Bjarki Diego, former manager of the Kaupþing corporate division, was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in jail.

Björk Þórarinsdóttir, who sat on the Kaupþing loans committee, was acquitted.

Einar Pálmi Sigmundsson, former head of in-house trade at Kaupþing, was handed down a two-year suspended sentence.

Peter Christian Guðmarsson and Brown bears Snær Björnsson, former employees in Einar's department, were given Both an 18 month suspended sentence.

The court case began in late April and the hearings were the most wide-ranging and complex in Icelandic legal history. Over 50 witnesses were called, and testimony lasted for many weeks. They were quizzed on the nine defendants’ suspected illegal trade in their own bank’s shares in the lead up to its collapse. Charges laid by the Special Prosecutor claimed that the widespread illegal trade was carefully choreographed and highly deceptive.

The defendants’ lawyers cost over ISK 250 million (EUR 1.7 million/USD 1.9 million). The State must pay nearly ISK 100 million, with the defendants covering the rest of the bill."

i-thorts' i-Politics: Truth is - Town Halls Are Fleecing You!!

They squeal about cuts but the truth is town halls are spending more than ever - by fleecing you!

The hue and cry over the town hall cuts demanded by the Coalition government might give the impression that councils across Britain are on their last legs.

Warnings of libraries closing, services being slashed to the bone and waves of redundancies come repeatedly from the mouths of Labour politicians and the unions, all of it reverentially reported by the BBC...

An Extra Year Of Austerity Foreseen For Britain

Alongside the atement on Wednesday, the Chancellor's Autumn Statement on Wednesday, the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR - the independent fiscal watchdog) are set to tell George Osborne that the Government's efforts to reduce borrowing are in danger.

The OBR are expected to warn this week that the Chancellor looks set to miss his target for bringing down Britain's debt mountain; raising the prospect of more austerity measures.

Unless the Chancellor puts forward further hardship measures, Economists - alarmed by just how difficult it seems for the debt-ratio to begin decreasing in the foretold timescale of 2014-15 and 2015-16 (which Mr Osborne set to reduce GDP) - warn that Mr Osborne's goal for reductions to the gross domestic product were totally underestimated. This means the Chancellor's duel debt-reducing targets are more at risk because of the low growth-estimates and their knock-on impact on the Treasury's revenues.

"When the OBR was established in 2010 I said that the evidence of its success would come when a Chancellor of the Exchequer wished it had never been set up. I think that moment is approaching..."
Sir Alan Budd, chairman of the interim OBR, Sunday Telegraph 02/12/12

As if things aren't bad enough! The outcome being an extra year of hardship is foreseen for British citizens .

LIB DEMs TAX
Unearned
Wealth

Wealth Tax Nick Clegg was revising an 'old Liberal' idea when he put forth Liberal Demercrat's intentions to tax the wealthy: by rewarding 'hard work' but levying unearend wealth.

This bombshell of the Deputy PM's temporary wealth tax has shook Westminster; upsetting both Tories and Labour MPs into from their summer hiatus. Both parties have poured critisism on Mr Glegg's plans for a "time limited contribution" from society's rich.

What Price Gold Medals

Surely
Not!

I must be going mad, because I'm sure that this morning (21/08/12) I read that the Government want to hand-out Honours to Team GB winners!

Not a midlife crisis!

Not A
Mid-life
Crisis

The world has become obsessed with age. Too young, too old, almost past it!

But who says that age is so important? And why?

What's the right age to start having sex? And when is it too old to want it? And how come you can never get enough between the two points?

Have we become obsessed by youth? Look around and tell me the average age of the Ad-Girls and -Boys. Or their models. Where are the older representatives?

No one wants to see where they're going, only where they've been. That's the thing.

A Coalition Collapse?

Is There About to be
a Coalition Collapse?

According to a Guardian ICM poll only 16% of voters expect the coalition government (Tory/Lib Dems) to survive to 2015. Due to dissention in the ranks. (Tories failed to support House of Lords Reform bill, causing Nick Clegg to acuse Tories of breaking coalition contract.) This is as the coalition government prepare for a mid-term policy review (in October).

Tell Me I'm Wrong!

Tell Me
I'm Wrong

I'm getting old. I must be. All I see around me is heartache and pain. Idiots and morons.

Does no one care anymore?

When I was a lad we cared. We cared about music and girls... we cared about politics and fashion... we cared about life and death... we cared about freedom and justice... we simply cared.

Today... No one cares
.

We don't care about the environment. At least, most of us don't. There are a few overbearing pop stars (like Sting) that bleat on about saving the planet while schlepping from continent to continent by their own private jet (using fossil fuel and emitting CO2 gasses like a madman). Other than these wannabees, no one 'really' cares.

Politics of Tarot

Will the Tories keep the crown
and take the throne?

I'm here again with my deck of 22 Major Arcana -third day in a row. This is getting a habit, lol.

I'm starting at the very beginning today. I'll shuffle the cards. Placed them face down on the surface. First cut; take top card and place it face down on right. Second cut; top card to the left of the first. Third cut; place card to the left of the 2nd card.

There are now three cards: representing FUTURE (3rd) - PRESENT (2nd) - PAST (1st)

Can Lib Dems Have it All?

I have a question firmly in mind, and drawn three Major Arcana from my Tarot pack (I’ve laid down the three: on the right for past, centre for present, and on the left for future - all face down). I've meditating to clear my mind and now I'm ready.

Politics of Tarot

Can Labour Take the Crown

To begin with
I’m sat meditating, after drawing three cards from my Tarot pack. (To be more precise, I’ve separated the Major Arcana and shuffled them to mix them up a bit and it is from these 22 cards that I have cut and removed three.)

I had a question firmly in my mind as I worked the deck and drew out my hand. As per usual, I’m laying down a hand of three: past (on the right), present (centre), and future (to the left). They’re all face down at present, because I didn’t want to influence my divination in any way.

Now is the moment of truth…

Britain PLC

Do They Intend to Privatise Great Britain?

21st century Britain is quietly been sold-off, part-by-part, to the private sector and no one seems to have noticed. Except you’re truly of course.

The problem of having public assets (or state-run ownership) is they are rich for the picking by the private sector. They are cash-cows, perfect for breaking apart and asset stripping.

Remploy Workers - No Rights to Work

No Rights to Work

Remploy - putting ability first
When all they want is to work it seems a disgrace that the disadvantaged should have another setback.

The staff of Remploy factories, across the country, are on strike today, due to threats of job losses. Remploy was setup to be a place disabled workers could find gainful employment with employers that took their disabilities into account: Under the scheme of Access to Work.

Olympic Hand

The Politics of Tarot

Usually in this post I look at something that's currently been in the news (last week G4S was in the spotlight), this week we'll peer at the Olympics and try to see if we'll keep any Gold.

The problem about predictions is: If they come true nobody notices. But if they don't, then everyone remembers.
Here's hoping for a gold medal for predicting gold :D
